Belarus boosts forces near Ukraine border

Belarus is increasing its military presence near the border with Ukraine and forming a new airborne assault brigade, but there is currently no immediate threat of an offensive.

Axar.az reports, citing Ukrainian media, that Andriy Demchenko, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service, said Ukrainian authorities were closely monitoring the situation and viewed Belarus’s military buildup as a potential threat.

However, he said there was currently no evidence that Belarus was preparing an offensive and that the forces deployed near the border were not capable of posing an immediate danger to Ukraine.

Belarus is also forming a new 37th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade near Gomel, about 40 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
