US President Donald Trump said he would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz a territory of the United States after defeating Iran.

Axar.az reports, citing CBS, that Trump said during remarks in New York on Friday.

“After we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated, pretty soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States," Trump said.

Trump also claimed that the US blockade of the strategic waterway remained in place, saying, “No ships get through unless we want them to.”

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital international waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and carrying a significant share of global oil supplies.
