Canada sanctions five Iranians over Strait of Hormuz

Canada has imposed sanctions on five Iranian individuals over their involvement in activities that undermine international navigation rights in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

Axar.az reports, citing the Government of Canada's official website, that the sanctions target senior Iranian officials, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), for military, legal and communications activities that Canada says threaten the strategic waterway and violate international law.

“Freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is essential to global trade and energy security. Today’s sanctions target individuals whose actions undermine these principles and threaten global economic and energy security. Canada calls on Iran to de-escalate and respect international navigation rights,” Foreign Minister Anita Anand said.

With the latest measures, Canada has sanctioned 232 Iranian individuals and 260 Iranian entities under its Special Economic Measures (Iran) Regulations.
