US approves possible $4.5B sale of KC-46A tankers to Qatar

The US State Department has approved a possible $4.5 billion Foreign Military Sale to Qatar for up to four KC-46A aerial refueling aircraft and related equipment.

Axar.az reports, citing the US State Department, that the proposed package includes four KC-46A aircraft, eight PW4062 turbofan engines, radar warning receivers, infrared countermeasure systems, missile warning sensors, electronic warfare equipment, spare parts, training and logistical support.

The department said the sale would strengthen Qatar’s defense capabilities and interoperability with US and allied forces while supporting its strategic role in regional security.

“The proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to improve the security of a strategic regional partner that has been and continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East,” the State Department said.

The principal contractors would include Boeing, Pratt & Whitney Military Engines, RTX and Northrop Grumman.

The State Department said the proposed sale would not alter the basic military balance in the region or adversely affect US defense readiness.
