Bessen: Major US military actions against Iran unlikely

The United States is unlikely to resume large-scale military operations against Iran as the Trump administration intensifies economic pressure on Tehran.

Axar.az reports that the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made the remarks in an interview with CNBC on Thursday.

“If we are doing the maximum economic pressure, then that means that likely there will not be a large-scale kinetic restart,” Bessent said.

Bessent said Washington would impose the toughest sanctions in history on countries that continue doing business with Iran, including transferring money, buying Iranian oil or conducting ship-to-ship transfers.

“You are either with us or against us,” Bessent said, previewing the administration’s plan to allies.

“If you insist on doing business with [Iran], either transferring money, buying their oil or doing seaborne ship transfers, then the U.S. Treasury and the U.S. government ... will put its full might and force toward enforcing against you,” he said.

Bessent said the economic campaign would work alongside a US naval blockade of Iranian ports.

“It is a one-two punch. We have the blockade, and we are going to have the toughest sanctions in history,” he said. “We are going to collapse this regime.”

Bessent said he would hold a news conference Monday to outline the administration’s economic measures against Iran.
