US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 50% tariffs on cars, trucks, auto parts and metals imported from Canada starting January 1, 2027.

Axar.az reports, citing CNBC News, that Trump made the threat Monday after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would retaliate against new US tariffs on Canadian goods.

“Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that Canada was “among the worst Nations in the World to deal with” on trade.

The escalation follows new US tariffs that took effect Saturday after trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa broke down. Carney said Canada would match the new US tariffs “dollar for dollar” to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.

“You’re at war when you get attacked,” Carney said Saturday. “We got attacked.”

Canada is the third-largest source of US imports, with more than $380 billion worth of goods imported in 2025.
