US lifts Syria’s state sponsor of terrorism designation

The United States has revoked Syria’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism and removed Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from its list of Specially Designated Global Terrorist organizations.

Axar.az reports, citing the State and Treasury departments, that the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control also removed HTS from the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List.

The move follows President Donald Trump’s pledge to provide sanctions relief to Syria and is intended to encourage investment and support political and economic stability, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said.

The US had already revoked HTS’s designation as a Foreign Terrorist Organization in July 2025.

At the same time, the Treasury Department imposed sanctions on two former HTS affiliates accused of continuing to support al-Qaida and Hurras al-Din.
