Canada will impose new counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of U.S. products starting September 8, matching tariffs imposed by Washington on Canadian goods.

Axar.az reports, citing the Canadian media, that the Canadian government said the measures were announced after negotiations with the United States failed to produce a mutually beneficial trade agreement.

The new tariffs will take effect at 12:01 a.m. on September 8.

The countermeasures will target products in sectors including steel and aluminum, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics and electronics.

In some sectors, including steel and aluminum, existing Canadian counter-tariffs will increase from 25% to 50% to match U.S. tariff rates.

Canada said existing counter-tariffs on other U.S. products, including automobiles, will remain in place.

The government said the measures are in response to the United States' decision to impose a 50% tariff on $27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods effective August 22.
