Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on the UN secretary-general, the Security Council and member states to condemn the US “economic terrorism operation” against Iran.

Axar.az reports, citing IRNA, that in a letter, Araghchi said the US measures announced on August 24 seek to end lawful economic relations with Iran through threats of secondary sanctions and exclusion from the US financial system.

He argued that the measures amount to an attempt to extend US laws and foreign policy beyond its jurisdiction and pressure sovereign states to change their lawful trade relations with Iran.

Araghchi also asked UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to assess and report on the humanitarian and human rights consequences of the measures, including their impact on civilians’ access to essential goods and services.

Iran said it reserved the right to pursue legal avenues for accountability and compensation over what it considers unlawful US actions.
