Poland does not want US nuclear warheads on its territory

Poland does not want nuclear warheads stationed on its territory.

Axar.az reports, citing Reuters, that Deputy Defence Minister Pawel Zalewski made the remarks Thursday.

“No — that is what I would like to say very clearly and openly. Poland does not want to have nuclear warheads on its territory,” Zalewski told reporters at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

He stressed that Poland wanted to participate in NATO’s nuclear deterrence without hosting nuclear weapons.

“We want to participate in NATO nuclear deterrence, which does not mean having nuclear warheads on our territory,” Zalewski said.

At the same time, he said Warsaw was interested in increasing the permanent US military presence in Poland under Washington’s ongoing review of its troop deployments in Europe.

US President Donald Trump pledged in May to send an additional 5,000 American troops to Poland on a permanent basis. Washington announced a six-month review of US troop deployments in Europe in June.
