Former Chinese official sentenced to death for bribery

Former Hubei provincial Party chief Jiang Chaoliang was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve on Friday for accepting more than 746 million yuan ($111 million) in bribes.

Axar.az reports, citing China Daily, that the Nanjing Intermediate People’s Court in Jiangsu province also deprived Jiang of political rights for life and ordered the confiscation of all his personal assets.

His illicit gains and related proceeds will be seized and transferred to the state treasury.

The court found that Jiang exploited his positions between 1995 and 2025 to help individuals and departments with business operations, loan approvals, project contracting and job promotions in exchange for bribes.

However, the court imposed a two-year reprieve because Jiang confessed to his crimes, voluntarily disclosed previously unknown details of his bribery, reported major offenses committed by others and actively returned illicit gains.

If his death sentence is commuted to life imprisonment after two years, Jiang will not be eligible for further sentence reductions or parole.

Jiang, 69, served as Hubei Party secretary from 2016 to 2020 and previously held senior positions in China’s banking sector and as governor of Jilin province. He was investigated in February 2025 and expelled from the Communist Party and dismissed from public office later that year.
