Germany is preparing to formally blame Russia for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport and impose “extensive” sanctions on Russian entities.

Axar.az reports, citing Politico, that Chancellor Friedrich Merz is expected to announce the measures early next week, potentially coinciding with an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Ireland, according to three officials familiar with the plans.

The measures could include intensified sanctions against Russian entities and potentially increased arms deliveries to Ukraine, although officials did not provide details.

The planned move comes after a drone rigged with explosives was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport. German media investigations have linked the incident to Russia, while The Wall Street Journal reported that US intelligence assessments also attributed the drone to Moscow. Russia has denied involvement.

The German government has yet to make an official attribution. A government spokesperson told Politico that Berlin would announce responsibility only after assessing the results of the investigation.

The planned action comes amid growing tensions between Germany and Russia and a series of security incidents across Europe that Western officials have described as part of Russia’s alleged “hybrid warfare.”

At the EU level, diplomats said a new sanctions package targeting about 1,600 Russian individuals and companies is being prepared, with adoption expected in October.
