U.S. President Donald Trump’s new oil agreement with Venezuela could give the United States access to 65 billion barrels of crude from 17 Venezuelan oil fields.

Axar.az reports, citing Fox News, that Venezuela holds more than 300 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, roughly 20% of the global total, making it the world’s largest oil reserve holder.

The deal could benefit U.S. Gulf Coast refineries, which are designed to process the heavy crude produced by Venezuela. Increased Venezuelan supplies could also diversify U.S. imports and potentially help replenish the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

However, Venezuela currently produces only about 1% of the world’s oil despite its vast reserves, due to years of political instability, underinvestment and deteriorating infrastructure.

The agreement is therefore unlikely to provide immediate relief at U.S. gas pumps. Its potential impact will depend on how quickly Venezuela can restore production and bring additional crude to market.
