The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors on Wednesday unanimously adopted a resolution removing Syria’s “non-compliance” case from its agenda, formally closing the longstanding issue.

Axar.az reports, citing Qatar News Agency, that the Board expressed satisfaction with the cooperation of Syria’s new authorities after allowing IAEA inspectors access to key nuclear sites.

The resolution, submitted by Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Saudi Arabia, calls on Syria to continue cooperating with the Agency, including drilling activities at the Dair Alzour site.

The resolution also requests the IAEA Director General to inform the Board, as appropriate, about the results of the Agency’s ongoing activities in Syria.

The Syrian Atomic Energy Commission said the decision followed intensive diplomatic efforts over the past 18 months and reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to international standards and transparency while maintaining its right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

The Commission said the decision formally recognizes Syria’s right to use nuclear science for peaceful purposes under its Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement, including in medicine, agriculture and scientific research.
