The UN Security Council will hold an emergency briefing on Yemen on September 10 following a recent escalation between the Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia.

Axar.az reports, citing the UN Security Council, that Bahrain and the UK, the Council’s penholder on Yemen, requested the meeting after Houthi attacks on several locations in southern Saudi Arabia on September 8. UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg is expected to brief the Council.

Grundberg is expected to warn that the escalation could widen the conflict and worsen Yemen’s already severe humanitarian crisis. Council members are also likely to call for restraint, protection of civilians and a return to UN-led political negotiations.

According to the WHO, fighting between August 24 and September 6 killed 194 people and injured 884 others in several parts of Yemen. The UN has also reported that more than 5,600 households have been displaced from Taiz and southern Hodeidah since September 3.
