Bessent defends Iran campaign as energy prices surge

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the Trump administration’s war on Iran while facing questions from Democrats on the House Financial Services Committee over rising prices.

Axar.az reports, citing the New York Times, that Bessent said the strength of the U.S. economy enabled Washington to launch an economic isolation campaign against Iran and its allies.

"The strength of our economy has allowed the United States to wage the greatest economic isolation campaign in the history of the world against the Islamic Republic of Iran and its enablers,” Bessent said.

He also defended President Donald Trump’s decision to take military action against Tehran, saying previous administrations had postponed confronting an Iranian regime seeking nuclear weapons.

“President Trump has taken action that his predecessors have long deferred against a regime that devotes itself to ‘Death to America”’ and seeks nuclear weapons to do just that. Under his leadership, America is no longer managing the Iranian threat. We are ending it,” Bessent said.

The conflict has contributed to a surge in global energy prices, raising concerns among lawmakers about its economic impact on American consumers.
