Most Germans do not expect coalition ‘fresh start’

Three-quarters of Germans do not believe the country’s governing coalition of the CDU/CSU and SPD will make a fresh start after the summer recess, according to an RTL/ntv Trеndbarometer survey conducted by Forsa.

Axar.az reports, citing Forsa, that only 23% of respondents believe the coalition partners will work more closely together, while 75% expect disputes between the governing parties to continue.

Supporters of the CDU/CSU are the most optimistic, with 42% expecting a fresh start. However, 57% of Union supporters still do not expect the coalition to improve its cooperation. Pessimism is higher among SPD supporters at 68%, Greens supporters at 70%, Left Party supporters at 86% and AfD supporters at 94%.

The survey also found that 38% of Germans expect conditions in the country to worsen by the end of the CDU/CSU-SPD government’s term, while 36% expect no change. Only 25% believe Germany will be better off.

Among CDU/CSU supporters, 52% expect an improvement, compared with just 30% of SPD supporters. Expectations of deterioration are particularly high among eastern Germans at 48%, Left Party supporters at 52% and AfD supporters at 83%.

Meanwhile, 16% of employed respondents said they were currently worried about losing their jobs, the same level recorded at the end of last year. The figure was higher among self-employed people, at 26%.

Forsa conducted the survey on August 29 and September 1 among 1,006 respondents on behalf of RTL Deutschland. The statistical margin of error is ±3 percentage points.
