Georgia’s parliament has approved Tamaz Borashvili as head of the State Security Service (SSS) with 83 votes.

Axar.az reports, citing Georgian media, that Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze nominated Borashvili for the position on September 14. He had previously served as deputy head of the SSS.

Borashvili was appointed deputy head of the SSS on September 4, 2025, during the tenure of Mamuka Mdinaradze. Before that, he served as director of the SSS’s State Security Department.

The previous SSS chief, Geka Geladze, announced his resignation in a Facebook post and was later appointed deputy interior minister by Kobakhidze.

Under Georgian law, the head of the State Security Service is elected for a six-year term.
