The United States, Denmark, and Greenland have reached an agreement allowing Washington to significantly expand its military presence on the Arctic island, US President Donald Trump said.

Axar.az reports, citing Reuters, that the agreement gives the US permanent access to Greenland for security and defense purposes and prevents US adversaries from establishing military bases or making sensitive investments there without Washington’s approval.

The deal falls short of Trump’s previous push for the US to acquire Greenland outright. The parties had also discussed using Greenland for elements of the Trump administration’s planned Golden Dome missile-defense system.

Trump said the agreement has no expiry date. The arrangement is intended to strengthen US and allied security in the Arctic while limiting the ability of rival powers to establish a strategic presence on the island.
