French President Emmanuel Macron has reaffirmed France’s sovereignty over Saint Pierre and Miquelon during a three-day visit to the French territory in the North Atlantic.

Axar.az reports, citing Le Monde, that Macron arrived in the archipelago on Saturday and is due to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney there on Sunday. The visit is seen as a symbolic reaffirmation of French and Canadian sovereignty amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s stated ambitions regarding territories in the region.

Trump recently posted a map on social media depicting Canada, Greenland, the Caribbean and Saint Pierre and Miquelon under the U.S. flag.

The French territory, located off the coast of Newfoundland, is the last remaining French territorial possession in North America.
