Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD) is leading in the state election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, while the Left Party has emerged as the largest party in Berlin, according to initial projections.

Axar.az reports, citing Deutsche Welle, that the AfD is projected to receive about 37% in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, ahead of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) at 35.5%. Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU is projected at around 5.5%.

In Berlin, the Left Party is projected to lead with 24.5%, followed by the CDU with 20% and the AfD with 16%.

Merz described the result in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as “a disaster” and said Germany needed reforms. He added that his government would continue working to reshape the country.

The results come two weeks after the CDU suffered a major setback in Saxony-Anhalt, where it received 17.2% while the AfD won 43.8%.
