Iran and the United States have signaled a possible return to negotiations as Presidents Masoud Pezeshkian and Donald Trump are due to attend the UN General Assembly in New York.

Axar.az reports, Reuters, that a senior Iranian official said Tehran’s delegation has full authority to revive talks with Washington. The official said Iran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz to Gulf shipping within seven days if the US eases military pressure and lifts its blockade of Iranian ports.

“The US needs to announce that it wants to resolve the issue diplomatically,” the official said, adding that the UN General Assembly was a “golden opportunity” for Washington to return to diplomacy.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington was open to talks with Iran, particularly if they could lead to a positive outcome and achieve the US objective. He also said there was “no harm in engaging and talking” with Iran.

No direct meeting between Trump and Pezeshkian has been scheduled, although both leaders are expected to be in New York. The two countries have not held face-to-face talks since July, when an interim agreement aimed at ending the conflict collapsed.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, meanwhile, reiterated Tehran’s firm position, saying Iran would not surrender and that Trump could not impose his power on the Iranian people and armed forces.
