The Trump administration is open to meeting Iranian officials during the UN General Assembly in New York, but no meeting has been scheduled, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday.

Axar.az reports, citing CNN, that Rubio said Washington was open to such an engagement if it could lead to a positive outcome.

"I don’t think anything is scheduled at this point, but we’re certainly open to something like that, especially if it has the prospects of leading to something positive and ultimately achieving the goal of what this is all about, and that is the fact that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon," Rubio said.

Rubio later said President Donald Trump was open to meeting Pezeshkian or other Iranian officials, while noting that Iran’s Supreme Leader has the final say on major decisions.

"Whether something productive will come out of it, it’s harder to tell because the ultimate decision-maker in Iran is the Supreme Leader, and the Supreme Leader is a radical Shia cleric, and we need to remember that when we talk, we’re not just talking about politicians here, we’re talking about people who are theologically driven to make the decisions that they make," he continued.

It should be noted that Trump previously told Fox News that he could meet Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
