The United States will "immediately begin the process of developing a large military presence” on Greenland, including “two very major military bases,” US President Donald Trump said.

Axar.az reports, citing CNN, that Trump made the remarks at the UN General Assembly in New York, days after he said he had reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that would give the United States “permanent control” over the island’s security.

“We will have the complete ability to do what is necessary to defend the American continent and also Europe and other places,” Trump told world leaders.

“No US adversary will ever be permitted to establish a military presence in Greenland anymore, or make sensitive investments there without our express written approval,” he continued.

“By expanding America’s footprint in the Arctic and North Atlantic, this deal also protects Europe, in addition to America, and greatly protects them. It also very much enhances NATO,” Trump added.

Trump said the agreement on Greenland would be signed later on Tuesday.
