UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged world powers to strengthen international cooperation, warning that military power alone cannot guarantee peace.

Axar.az reports, citing the Guardian, that Guterres made the remarks in his final address to the UN General Assembly before leaving office at the end of the year.

“The fault lines in our world are widening,” Guterres said, pointing to wars, rising temperatures and artificial intelligence. He called for “a world built on interdependence – and sustained by a dense web of economic, political, social and technological connections.”

Guterres also criticized the idea that military power can determine international affairs, telling superpowers to recognize “that their power isn't so super.” He added: “Military power alone cannot secure peace.”

The UN chief concluded his speech by saying: “Wherever I will be, whatever I will be doing, I will keep championing the conviction that peace is possible.” He received a standing ovation from the assembly.
