This year’s “super El Nino” could cause as many as 451,000 excess deaths worldwide over the six months through February 2027 due to extreme heat.

Axar.az reports, citing Reuters, that the number of extremely hot days is expected to rise by 44% compared with normal years.

Nigeria is projected to record the highest number of excess heat-related deaths, at around 31,400, followed by Indonesia with 19,300 and Sudan with 17,600.

The Sahel region of Africa, including Niger, Chad, Nigeria and Sudan, could see an additional 66,800 deaths. The Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia are projected to record about 19,400 additional deaths combined.

Researchers warned that the death toll could rise further if El Nino continues into 2027, with India and Pakistan particularly vulnerable during their summer months.

Climate Impact Lab described this year’s El Nino as a “postcard from the future,” saying it is producing temperatures that could become normal within a few decades.

"Super El Nino" events, officially called very strong El Nino events, are climatic phenomena resulting from the average sea surface temperatures in parts of the Pacific Ocean rising by 2° Celsius or more.
