Turkiye and Iraq have agreed to strengthen security cooperation, restore full Iraqi state authority in Sinjar and gradually hand over the Bashiqa-Zilkan military base to Baghdad.

Axar.az reports, citing Turkish media, that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi reached the agreement during talks in New York on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly.

Under the agreement, Ankara and Baghdad will work to restore Iraqi state authority in Sinjar and end the presence of banned foreign armed groups in the area.

As security measures are implemented, Turkish forces will gradually hand over the Bashiqa-Zilkan base to Iraq's federal government under a mutually agreed mechanism and timetable.

The two countries also agreed to expand trade and investment, accelerate previously signed agreements and advance joint strategic projects, particularly the Development Road Project linking Iraq's Gulf coast with Turkiye and European markets.
