Ali Himmati Sistani and Majid Nikandesh, who were accused of taking part in the January unrest in Mashhad, have been executed.

Axar.az reports, citing Iranian media, that the sentences were carried out after being upheld by the Supreme Court.

According to the allegations, during the January protests in Mashhad, participants set fire to shops, a bank and a bus, blocked streets, and attacked security forces.

The court claimed that Himmati and Nikandesh confessed to attacking two members of the Basij militia with knives, as well as setting fire to and looting a shop.

Both men were sentenced to death following trials conducted in the presence of their lawyers.

The Supreme Court upheld the sentences.
