Danish ambassador summoned to Russian Foreign Ministry

Russia has summoned Denmark’s ambassador to Moscow, Rolf Holmboe, over what it described as provocative actions by a Danish Fennec helicopter near the Russian corvette Soobrazitelny in the southwestern Baltic Sea.

Axar.az reports, citing the Russian Foreign Ministry, that Moscow lodged a protest with Copenhagen, describing the incident as a violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The ministry warned that similar actions could lead to escalation and create a risk of a serious incident amid heightened tensions in the Baltic region.

Russia said the Danish helicopter approached the corvette to within less than 50 metres, posing a threat to maritime safety. The Russian crew fired two signal flares in a direction away from the helicopter, after which it ended what Moscow described as provocative actions.

Copenhagen said the aircraft had been conducting “routine photography” of the Russian vessel and described Russia’s actions as unacceptable.

The incident occurred on September 14.
