Merz arrives in Kyiv on unannounced visit

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit on Sunday, pledging continued support for Ukraine ahead of the winter.

Axar.az reports, citing Deutsche Welle, that Merz was accompanied by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and 10 business representatives from the defense and energy sectors. He is expected to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Today I came to Kyiv because Ukraine needs our support in the coming weeks. If Russia is not stopped, its war machine will sooner or later turn against us," Merz said upon arrival.

According to reports, Merz is expected to announce a new aid package for Ukraine, including €1 billion in weapons and €350 million to support the country’s energy sector.

The package is also expected to include joint drone production in Germany and Ukraine, as well as the development and production of long-range weapons with a range of more than 1,000 kilometers.

The visit is Merz’s second trip to Kyiv since taking office in 2025 and the fourth visit by a German chancellor to Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
