Greece renews German war reparations demands

Greece’s claims for German war reparations remain active and legally enforceable, Greek President Konstantinos Tassoulas said on Sunday, as the country commemorated the 83rd anniversary of the Lingiades massacre.

Axar.az reports, citing Greek City Times, that speaking at a memorial event in Lingiades near Ioannina, Tassoulas said Greece would continue pursuing compensation for crimes committed during the Nazi occupation.

“The claims and demands of the Hellenic Republic concerning German reparations remain active, lawful, imprescriptible and subject to pursuit,” Tassoulas said.

German troops killed 89 people in Lingiades and nearby Amfithea on October 3, 1943, including 41 children, after looting and burning the village.

“We remember, we pursue our claims and we protect our future, because we honour the civilians who fell here in Lingiades 83 years ago,” Tassoulas said.

Greece has long sought compensation for Nazi-era atrocities, destruction and an enforced occupation loan. Germany has rejected the claims, arguing that the issue has been legally settled.

According to Greek estimates, the total amount being sought ranges from €278 billion to €341 billion, depending on the method of calculation.
