Boat collision on Congo River kills at least 30

At least 30 people were killed, and dozens remain missing after two boats collided on the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, local authorities said Monday.

Axar.az reports, ciitng the Associated Press, that the motorized wooden boats collided Sunday evening near Ngombe-Lukolela in Equateur province. Provincial Interior Minister Crispin Mputu said the cause of the crash was not immediately known, but nighttime navigation has caused accidents in the past.

One boat was traveling from Ubangi to Kinshasa, while the other was heading from Kinshasa to Lukolela. Search efforts are continuing to find missing passengers and survivors.

Deadly boat accidents are common in Congo, with nighttime travel, overcrowding, poor safety standards and limited infrastructure frequently contributing to such disasters.
