Iranian president to attend CIS summit for first time

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will attend the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) summit in Turkmenistan on October 9, marking the first time an Iranian president has taken part in the summit, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said.

Axar.az reports, citing Russian media, that Ushakov said Pezeshkian would participate in the expanded-format meeting of CIS leaders before delivering a speech at the Caspian Environmental Summit.

"For the first time in CIS history, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has been invited to the expanded meeting," Ushakov said.

Ushakov said Russian President Vladimir Putin will make a working visit to Turkmenistan on October 8–9 to attend the events.

Commenting on Putin’s possible meetings with CIS leaders, Ushakov said no separate meeting between the Russian leader and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is currently planned in Turkmenistan.

Nine CIS leaders have officially confirmed their attendance.

Putin and Pezeshkian last met in Bishkek in early September, where they discussed bilateral relations and regional issues.
