Hungary lifts veto on Ukraine EU accession talks

Hungary is set to lift its veto on Ukraine’s EU accession bid, potentially clearing the way for the opening of two more negotiating clusters.

Axar.az reports, citing Rapporteur, that Budapest has indicated it would stop opposing the opening of Clusters 2 and 3 if Ukraine’s parliament approves an agreement with Hungary on protecting the rights of the Hungarian minority.

The Verkhovna Rada is expected to vote on the amendments on October 12. If approved, the EU could hold an intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg on October 13 or 14 to formally open negotiations on the two clusters, covering the single market and competitiveness.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said there was a possibility of opening the next two clusters for Ukraine and Moldova next week.

The EU opened Clusters 1 and 6 in June and July. Hungary’s new government, led by Peter Magyar, had blocked further progress pending an agreement on minority rights.

European Council President Antonio Costa has called for Ukraine and Moldova to advance together, with the goal of opening all accession clusters for both countries by the end of the year, subject to the required conditions.
