New strikes on Riyadh airport leave people injured

A fire broke out at King Khalid International Airport in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, after an unidentified projectile struck a passenger terminal, the Saudi-led coalition has said.

Axar.az reports, citing Al Arabiya, that the projectile hit Terminal 4 on Sunday, prompting emergency teams to respond to the fire.

Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Malki later said Saudi air defences had intercepted and destroyed a cruise missile near the airport.

The incident comes amid escalating attacks on Saudi airports as fighting intensifies between Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement and forces of the internationally recognised government.

Earlier in the week, attacks on airports in Riyadh and the southwestern city of Abha left three people dead and 36 injured, Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said.

It should be noted that Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation announced the previous day that at least 12 people had been killed and another 309 injured in a Houthi attack on the airport.

Riyadh International Airport will remain closed until the end of October 11.
