Georgia secures cheaper electricity imports from Azerbaijan

Georgia’s savings from importing electricity from Azerbaijan without an intermediary could provide grounds for reducing electricity tariffs in the future, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has said.

Axar.az reports, Georgian media, that Georgia is paying 0.2 US cents less per unit of electricity than before, a change expected to save the country several million lari annually.

"What I can tell you is that we are paying 0.2 dollar cents less for electricity than before, which was a very important decision," Kobakhidze said.

"The economy minister worked very actively on the issue. With his involvement, we managed to purchase electricity from Azerbaijan at a lower price and without an intermediary," he added.

“We are talking about several million lari a year, and this will, of course, affect tariffs. In general, whatever savings we achieve will be fully allocated to improving conditions, strengthening the system and reinforcing electricity transmission lines. Naturally, this will also be reflected in tariffs,” Irakli Kobakhidze said.

Georgia imported 164 million kWh of electricity from Azerbaijan in January-August 2026, compared with 417 million kWh in 2025 and 186 million kWh in 2024.
