Iran summoned British Ambassador Hugo Shorter to the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday over the incident at the Fairford military base.
Axar.az reports, citing Iran’s IRNA news agency, that Alireza Yousefi, an assistant foreign minister and director general for Western Europe, said British officials should not use accusations against Iran to avoid responsibility for their involvement in US and Israeli military operations against Iran or for hosting groups and individuals Tehran describes as terrorist.
He called on the UK to provide evidence supporting its allegations concerning the Fairford incident as soon as possible, warning that Iran would seriously reconsider bilateral relations if London failed to do so. He said Britain would bear responsibility for any consequences.
Shorter said he would convey Iran’s position to British officials.
RAF Fairford, used by US strategic bombers, is considered one of Britain’s key military facilities. In late September, the detention of several people suspected of terrorism-related offences near the base triggered a large-scale counterterrorism operation. The suspects were later released on bail as the investigation continued.
Although details of the RAF Fairford case remain limited, the incident has become a new source of dispute amid strained relations between London and Tehran.
