Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the possibility of resuming military operations against Iran with US President Donald Trump last week before Israel’s October 27 election.
Axar.az reports, citing Israel’s Channel 12, that Netanyahu cited new concerning steps by Iran to revive various components of its nuclear programme as a reason for renewed military action.
According to the report, the two leaders discussed a large-scale joint US-Israeli operation targeting military facilities and nuclear sites. An Israeli official said Trump initially appeared inclined to give Netanyahu the green light but later became less enthusiastic about the proposal. A US official said Trump had shifted his position on the issue several times.
A US official quoted in the report said Trump had told Netanyahu to prepare, but had made no firm commitment to launch an operation. The official said the instruction could mean action soon, later, or not at all.
The report said Israel’s military and the US Central Command were maintaining a high state of readiness in case Trump changed his mind.
Meanwhile, Qatari mediators were still awaiting Iran’s response to the latest US proposals. A US official said negotiations had neither fully ended nor made significant progress, while Washington continued to increase pressure on Tehran.
