Borisenko: Decision to grant asylum to Assad remains unchanged

Russia’s decision to grant political asylum to former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad remains unchanged, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Borisenko has said.

Axar.az reports, citing RTVI, that Borisenko made the remarks in an interview when asked whether Syria’s new authorities continued to request Assad’s extradition.

“Our Syrian partners know well that Russia granted Bashar al-Assad political asylum on humanitarian grounds. The current authorities in Damascus understand that this Russian decision is unshakable,” Borisenko said.

Assad and his family sought refuge in Russia in December 2024 after armed opposition forces captured Damascus and overthrew the former government.
