Macron to address France after nationwide riots

French President Emmanuel Macron will address the nation at 8 p.m. local time (22:00 Baku time) on Sunday following widespread violence and looting during demonstrations against the rising cost of living.

Axar.az reports, citing Le Monde, that before his address, Macron will meet Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu and relevant government ministers at the Elysee Palace.

The government is facing mounting pressure from opposition parties and several mayors over its handling of Saturday’s demonstrations, which were accompanied by clashes, looting and fires in several French cities.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said that 1,800 people had been arrested and more than 500 police officers, gendarmes and firefighters had been injured.

The violence also left significant damage to public buildings and businesses, including the historic city hall in Limoges, which was severely damaged by fire.
