Truck crash kills 15 devotees at Indian temple - Video

15 people were killed and 27 injured after a truck struck devotees near Shitala Mata Temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India, before crashing into the temple’s entrance gate late on Saturday.

Axar.az reports, citing the Hindustan Times, that according to police, a preliminary investigation suggests that a mechanical failure caused the driver to lose control of the truck, which was carrying paddy rice. The vehicle broke through a police barricade, plowed into roadside stalls and devotees, and struck the temple gate, causing part of the wall to collapse.

Police said around 41 people were hit and five or six stalls selling prasad (religious offerings) were damaged. The truck owner, Mohit Singh, and driver Dilbag Singh have been arrested.

India’s Prime Minister’s Office announced compensation of 2 lakh rupees for the next of kin of each deceased person and 50,000 rupees for each injured person. Authorities said the injured were receiving medical treatment and necessary assistance.
