71% of US adults believe the country is heading in the wrong direction, the highest level recorded during President Donald Trump’s second term, according to a new NBC News Decision Desk Poll.

Axar.az reports, citing NBC News, that the survey found that Trump’s approval rating had fallen to 34%, while 66% disapproved of his performance. A majority, 51%, said they strongly disapproved of his presidency.

Among registered voters, 55% preferred Democrats to control Congress, compared with 45% who backed Republicans, highlighting the challenges facing the Republican Party ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

Economic concerns were central to public dissatisfaction. Only 18% of respondents said their financial situation was better than a year ago, while 44% said it had worsened. In addition, 67% described gasoline prices as a serious or somewhat serious problem.

Trump received a 27% approval rating for his handling of the cost of living, 29% for his handling of the war with Iran and 33% for his handling of artificial intelligence. His highest rating was on border security and immigration, at 43%.

The poll also found that 58% of respondents believed Trump’s policies were harming the country, while 28% said they were helping it.
