France imposes curfew in parts of Paris amid protests

France has imposed a curfew in parts of central Paris following violent protests and looting across the country over the weekend.

Axar.az, citing France 24, reports that the restrictions will take effect at 11 p.m. on Monday and remain in force until 6 a.m. on Tuesday. The curfew covers Place de la Republique and streets around the Les Halles district.

Earlier, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu called on regional authorities to introduce partial, localised curfews in areas affected by riots and looting to protect businesses and restore order. Authorities have also imposed a two-day curfew in the northern city of Lille and nearby Douai, Wattignies and Denain.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez acknowledged that police had “lost control” in several major cities during Saturday's unrest. President Emmanuel Macron rejected Nunez's resignation and called for new operational methods for security forces.

The unrest has led to widespread damage to businesses and public property, with more than 2,400 people arrested during the weekend protests, according to figures cited by French authorities.
