Niculescu confirmed as Romania’s new prime minister

Independent politician Luca Niculescu was confirmed as Romania’s new prime minister on October 20, ending five months of political uncertainty.

Axar.az reports, citing Romania Insider, that in a joint plenary session, 280 lawmakers voted in favour of his government, while 58 voted against. The cabinet comfortably surpassed the 233 votes required for confirmation.

“We are getting straight to work; we will hold the first government meeting this evening; Romania can no longer wait,” Niculescu said after the vote.

The new prime minister and his ministers are due to be sworn in before President Nicusor Dan, after which the government can formally take office.

Niculescu’s 18-member cabinet replaces the Liberal-led government of Ilie Bolojan, which was dismissed on May 5. The new cabinet includes 11 ministers from the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and seven independents.

Before the vote, the PSD, National Liberal Party (PNL), Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), national minorities group and United for Romania parliamentary group declared their support for the cabinet.
