Vance: Russia, Ukraine agreed to return to negotiating table

US Vice President JD Vance has said Russia and Ukraine remain far apart on details of a potential peace agreement, despite renewed diplomatic efforts.

Axar.az reports that, in response to the Forbes reporter, Vance was asked what gave him confidence that the latest round of peace talks would be different.

“I think both countries have agreed to come to the table. The reason why we haven't struck a peace deal is because they've just been too apart on some of the details of that negotiation,” Vance said.

He added that US special envoy Steve Witkoff had re-engaged the process and spoken with Russian and Ukrainian leaders over the previous few days.

“The nature of these things is you take a swing at it, you see how much progress you can make, and then you go back at it. And sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't,” he said.

Vance praised Witkoff, the diplomatic team, and the presidents for pursuing negotiations despite the challenges.

“We try to do the hard things knowing that we have a very tall mountain to climb. We still try to do them anyway,” he added.
