French authorities have detained 2,700 people following violence and looting during protests across the country on October 17-18, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Thursday.

Axar.az reports, citing Midi Libre, that 217 of those detained have been remanded in custody, including half who had no previous criminal record, Darmanin said.

The authorities are tightening security ahead of another planned day of mobilisation on October 24, with police and gendarmerie deployments set to increase by 20% compared with the previous protests. Several cities have also banned demonstrations in designated areas.
