Armenian court extends Sedrak Kocharyan’s detention

An Armenian court has extended the detention of Sedrak Kocharyan, the eldest son of former President Robert Kocharyan, by another two months.

Axar.az reports, citing Armenian media, Sedrak Kocharyan and his father are accused of abuse of official powers, money laundering on an especially large scale, and accepting or facilitating the receipt of bribes.

“The court has ordered Kocharyan to remain in detention for another two months. At this stage, it was difficult to expect any other outcome, given the pressure being exerted on the judicial system,” lawyer Hakob Kureghyan said.

It should be noted that Robert Kocharyan was detained on August 25. He has been charged in a case involving the illegal acquisition of property. According to investigators, during his presidency, he conspired with other individuals and used his official position to acquire several properties of public and economic significance at prices below market value.

The criminal case involves 35 assets belonging to the Kocharyan family, and some of the companies have been sealed.
