Germany’s efforts to build partnership with Russia failed

Germany made serious efforts for two decades to establish constructive relations and an energy partnership with Russia, but the policy failed as Moscow chose aggression, German Ambassador to Ukraine Boris Ruge has said.

Axar.az reports that, in an interview with European Pravda, Ruge said that those in Europe, including Germany, who advocate returning to positive relations with Russia have overlooked the experience of the past two decades.

“If we look at German-Russian relations after 1991, two things can be said. First, Germany was terribly wrong. We were wrong to believe that we could establish a partnership with Russia. Russia rejected the partnership we offered and became an aggressive imperialist actor seeking to overthrow the entire political order in Europe," the ambassador said.

"Germany and the rest of Europe did a great deal to build constructive and positive relations with Russia. This was evident in the work of the NATO-Russia Council and in the way we developed our energy partnership with Russia, among other things.

We tried. It was a failure. We made sincere efforts to establish forward-looking relations with Russia. But Russia simply threw all of this out the window and chose aggression, the use of military force and, as you know, hybrid attacks, trying to manipulate information and politics,” he said.

"I think you will find very few people today who are willing to put themselves in any kind of dependence on Russia again,” he added.
