Iran offers to reopen Hormuz if US lifts naval blockade

Iran remains open to negotiations with the United States under a Pakistan-brokered interim agreement aimed at ending the conflict, Tehran’s ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam has said.

Axar.az reports, citing the Associated Press, that Moghadam said Iran had recently conveyed through Pakistan its readiness to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if Washington lifted its naval blockade. However, he accused US President Donald Trump of rejecting the proposal by insisting that the blockade of Iranian ports would remain in place.

The ambassador said Iranian officials had communicated their willingness to reopen the strategic waterway during visits to Tehran by Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, on the condition that the United States end its blockade.

Pakistan and Qatar helped broker the interim agreement in June. It sought to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, lift the US naval blockade and launch negotiations on a broader agreement addressing Iran’s nuclear programme.
