Brazil votes in closely contested presidential run-off

Polls have opened in Brazil for a presidential run-off between incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and right-wing senator Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

Axar.az reports, citing the BBC, that Bolsonaro finished ahead in the first round on October 4, while Lula is seeking a fourth non-consecutive term.

According to the report, polling stations opened at 8:00 a.m. local time (3:00 p.m. Baku time).

Bolsonaro has pledged to crack down on organised crime, cut taxes and public spending, and release his father, who is serving a 27-year sentence for plotting a coup.

Lula has framed the election as a battle for democracy and national sovereignty, while accusing his rival’s political movement of threatening democratic institutions.
